Allen is married to wife of 40 years Beverly Nielson Andersen
- Children: Camille, Darlene (Gary), Elaine, Frederic (Jodi), Gregory (Emily)
- Grandchildren: Emily, Melissa, Jordan, Brandon, Aidan, Mason
- Allen has three brothers, Jack, David and Lynn. He has two sisters, Patsy and Julia Dee.

- Attended grade school and high school in Pocatello - graduated from Pocatello High School 1962
- Served in the Army Security Agency 1968 - Honorably discharged 29 February 1972 Rank of Specialist 5 E-5 MOS: Electronic Warfare Operator-Analyst; French translator
- Attended Ricks College and Idaho State University Graduated from Idaho State University 5/28/1971 - Bachelor of Science degree Mathematics, Minor: French Teaching Certification in Mathematics and French
- Post graduate: Master of Science in Secondary Education - Mathematics

- Certified with the National Education Association as a Mediator
- Taught Junior High School Mathematics and Science; High School Mathematics Coached Football, Girls and Boys Basketball, Wrestling
